Amsterdam Update

I know it has been FAR too long since I've updated this blog... I'm sorry. But I thought I would put up some pictures of our trip to Amsterdam this past weekend for those people not on facebook! And I'm going to do my best to write in both English and Danish so bear with me if its not perfect! :)

We were in Amsterdam for 4 days. Before we left, I did a lot of research on where to go and what kind of options I would have for gluten free food. I want to thank Barbara at Gluten Free Amsterdam for writing such a fantastic blog, it was so helpful and our trip was so much easier because of it so THANK YOU!!!!
TUSIND TAK!!!

Here is a picture from the airport. If you travel to Amsterdam and want to get a picture in front of this sign, I suggest using the sign at the airport and not the one at the Museum Plein! There were so many tourists there that it was impossible to get a picture in front of that sign!

Our first day consisted of walking around the 9 Streets neighborhood and Jordaan. Honestly this was because we were making our way up to the far northeast section of the city in search for Gluten Free Cupcakes! :) There was a wonderful bakery that I had read about online before we left called The Mad Bakers they advertise gluten free cupcakes and they were by far the best cupcakes I've had in years!!! We had one bite and both said they were "AmsterDAM good cupcakes!"

For dinner, we headed out to Sumo Sushi- another recommended gluten free restaurant that was awesome! It was all you can eat but instead of being a buffet it was a sit-down restaurant and you can order as many courses of food as you want within 2 hours. I was so happy to know that they were able to take care of the gluten free issues (they even have it marked on their menu and brought out gluten free soy sauce) And we ate SO much sushi!!!

The next morning, we met my friend Kim and her FIANCE Jordan for breakfast before visiting the famous Flower Market. There were so many tulip bulbs and every kind of flower you can imagine! We also made our way to a coffee shop, which we had heard were a big deal in Amsterdam... somehow I do not think the Starbucks we visited was the same kind of coffee shop... oh well! I got Starbucks!!! YAY!!!

We met up with Kim and her family-to-be at the Rijksmuesum where we spent the afternoon looking at  all the amazing artwork and beautiful paintings from artists like Rembrant and Van Gogh. It was incredible to see these paintings that I had studied in my Art History classes in college right up close. I highly recommend a visit to the Rijksmuseum if you are in Amsterdam!

We decided to keep dinner simple on day 2 so we visited a local grocery store, picked up some essentials, and enjoyed a relaxing dinner by the canal! :)
Sunday we got an early start and wandered through the Vondelpark while we waited for the bagel store (with gluten free bagels!!!) to open.

We pre-ordered our tickets to the Van Gogh museum the night before which is definitely the way to go if you want to see this incredible museum. The line was insane when we showed up and it wasn't even 9am!! This museum was probably one of my favorite parts of the trip for me. Again, I highly recommend a visit to the Van Gogh museum if you are in Amsterdam!

Another of my favorite parts of the trip, was our visit to PenelopeCraft a local yarn store. The selection was amazing and the staff was fantastic and friendly! And on top of that, they have a fantastic policy to entertain those who may be less than thrilled about spending time at a yarn store! :)
We had another couple of gluten free options for lunch and dinner on Sunday. For lunch we visited Pancakes! Amsterdam where we got to try dutch style pancakes (very different from American pancakes) Very tasty!!! :) For dinner we picked up a picnic at Piqniq to take with us on our canal tour!

On our canal tour, we got to see a lot of the city that we hadn't walked through yet and also hear a bit about the history of the city. Below are some of my favorite pictures from the canal tour!
Anne Frank House

Monday morning we headed out to visit the Albert Cuyp Market and walk around Old Town a bit before we had to head to the airport to come home. We were a little rushed, so no pictures from this part of the trip :( Overall, we had a fantastic trip and can't wait to go back again sometime!

Lots of Love!

Kærlig Hilsen!
-Joy & Klaus-
